Mary Meeker, Analyst and Partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers Venture Company, introduced annual list of internet trends. It consists of 355 slides and reflects the latest trends in the field of sales of smartphones, the entertainment industry, games, startups, and many other areas, one way or another connected with the World Wide Web.
We offer you the top 7 most interesting online trends of 2017.
7. Smartphones are not very active.
Global smartphone sales growth is slowing. In 2017, sales of the most popular smartphones grew by only 3% compared to last year. But in 2015, this figure was 10%.
6. Games on the rise
There are currently 2.6 billion computer game fans in the world, compared with 100 million in 1995. The lion's share of gaming revenue is still concentrated in Asia, where in 2016 gambling revenue amounted to $ 47 billion (out of $ 100 billion from around the world). The Meeker report calls video games “the most exciting form of social media,” with serious implications for business and cyber sports. The number of female gamers is growing and there is an increase in the average age of the gamer. The appearance of the largest number of players “from 35 and older” was noted in 2010.
5. The popularity of voice control is growing
Speech recognition software and devices, such as Amazon Echo, are gaining in popularity among both ordinary consumers and large companies. In a report by Meeker, Amazon Alexa’s voice assistant rival Google Home has achieved stunning word recognition accuracy. In 2017, this smart column correctly recognized 95% of the words addressed to it.
4. Google and Facebook are fine
Over the top of the list of the most popular Internet trends in 2017, two Internet giants could not stay. While the volumes of virtual advertising continue to grow (and will soon exceed the volumes of advertising on TV), by the end of 2016, most of this growth was recorded by search and social leaders - Google and Facebook. Google’s ad revenue grew 20% in 2016, making it the world's most expensive brand, and Facebook’s 62%. For all other competitors, growth was much more modest, no more than 9% per year.
3. Cloud wars
Amazon Web Services continues to lead the cloud in web services, but Google and Microsoft Azure are on the heels. This market diversification is due to the fact that customers are increasingly striving to “not keep all their eggs in one basket” and not completely depend on one player.
2. Advertising bothers more
About 400 million Internet users in different parts of the world have installed ad blockers. But advertisers do not give up and daily improve their methods with which you can convince a person to buy a product or service.
For example, advertisers now need precise targeting and tools to analyze ads.
If the advertiser company has data on the user's current location, she tries to use it by offering him those products or services that are relevant for a particular city.
Advertising works best based on user-generated content and the content of so-called “opinion leaders,” rather than the efforts of marketers.
Thanks to image recognition systems and cameras, advertisers can offer the user a different advertisement, depending on what he is looking at.
1. The number of Internet users is not growing too fast
The growth in the number of Internet users is slowing down worldwide, except for India. In 2016, it amounted to 10%. In total, 3.4 billion people are connected to the Internet.
But in India, a country with a rapidly growing economy, the number of people who have access to the Network last year grew by more than 28%. There are 355 million Internet users in India.
